Senior journalist Gyawali no more

Lumbini, July 27: Senior journalist Arjun Gyawali has passed away at age 80.     

The veteran journalist, who had made Rupandehi the base for his journalistic career, passed away in Kathmandu last night while undergoing treatment, and his last rites were performed today at Pashupati Aryaghat, his son, Sagar Gyawali, said.     

Gyawali was recently admitted to B&B Hospital for treatment after developing heart and lung problems. Having long been involved in the teaching profession, he began journalism in the year 2024 BS.     

Gyawali’s writings and ideas—which championed nationalism and patriotism in simple, accessible language—were highly favoured by readers. He served as the editor of the 'Lumbini Sandesh' weekly and worked as a journalism trainer.     

He was honored with the 'Press Freedom Fighter' award by the Federation of Nepali Journalists, the 'Excellence in Journalism' award from the Federation's Rupandehi chapter, and the 'Senior Journalist' honor from the Government of Nepal. Journalist Gyawali was decorated with dozens of honors, including the Gopal Gotame Gold Medal and the Social Service Medal conferred by the Lumbini Province Government.     

Gyawali is survived by a wife, a daughter, and two sons.(RSS)
