Deputy Speaker, Minister dwell national campaign to end dowry

By TRN Online, Kathmandu, July 22: Deputy Speaker Rubi Kumari and Minister for Women, Children, Sexual and Gender Minority and Social Security Sita Badi held a comprehensive discussion on carrying out the National Campaign to end dowry system from Madhesh province.

At the discussion held at the Ministry, the duo exchanged views on ways to expand the public awareness campaign against the dowry system across the country in a phase wise manner.

To make the campaign effective, the Deputy Speaker and the Minister dwelt on ensuring active participation of local levels, communities, religious and social leaders, youths, women groups and civil society.

Considering the fact that dowry system has been one of the main reasons for violence against women, sexual discrimination and social injustice, they both stressed on galvanizing strict implementation of prevailing laws, effective monitoring and widespread social awareness campaign to end the ill practice of the dowry.

Minister Badi said dowry is not only legal but also social challenge and a collective commitment of the state, local levels, academic institutions, civil society, news media and community was needed.

She viewed campaign to change practices in society needed to move forward in parallel with effective execution of laws.

Deputy Speaker Kumari expressed belief that the campaign to begin from Madhesh will disseminate a positive message across the country against dowry system.

She viewed about the need of an effective coordination among the federal, provincial and local governments and active collaboration among all stakeholders to make a country free from dowry system.
